Dr. Ashley Wysong MD, MS is a board-certified dermatologist, fellowship-trained Mohs micrographic surgeon, and internationally recognized skin cancer expert. A physician-leader, educator, and translational researcher, she is known for her clinical excellence, academic leadership, and deep commitment to mentorship and innovation in dermatology and healthcare delivery.

In 2025, Dr. Wysong joined Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, where she currently serves as Director of Mohs and Dermatologic Surgery, bringing her expertise in complex oncologic reconstruction and high-risk skin cancers to one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers.

From 2018 to 2024, she served as Founding Chairman, Tenured Professor and the William W. Bruce MD Distinguished Chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and Nebraska Medicine. She built the department from the ground up—recruiting over 20 faculty, launching Nebraska’s first dermatology residency, and establishing comprehensive clinical, research, and educational programs. She also led the Skin Cancer Program at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and served as Chief of Dermatology at the Nebraska-Western Iowa VA. Institutionally, she held leadership roles including Chair of the Clinical Program Executive Committee, Co-Chair of Financial Sustainability Initiatives, and member of the Nebraska Medicine Medical Group Executive Committee.

Dr. Wysong holds a BS in biology, psychology, and chemistry from the University of Missouri, where she was a six-time NCAA All-American and national champion in track and field. After running professionally for Nike, she earned an MS in Epidemiology from Stanford and graduated as valedictorian from Duke University School of Medicine. She completed her dermatology residency at Stanford (serving as chief resident) and a Mohs surgery/procedural dermatology fellowship at Scripps Clinic under Dr. Hugh Greenway. Before joining UNMC, she was Director of Mohs & Dermatologic Surgery at University of Southern California and USC+LA County Hospital and ran the Multidisciplinary Skin Cancer Tumor Board at USC’s Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.

A nationally recognized expert in Mohs surgery and facial reconstruction, Dr. Wysong is known for her meticulous technique and for treating complex oncologic cases, including melanoma and rare skin tumors. She is nationally and internationally recognized for her reconstructive skill and was awarded the prestigious “Iron Surgeon” gold medal by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery in 2016. She also offers laser and cosmetic procedures, including scar revision for complex traumatic and surgical scars.

Her research focuses on high-risk and advanced squamous and basal cell carcinomas, especially in immunocompromised patients such as solid organ transplant recipients and those with hematologic malignancies. She is a leader in translational cancer epidemiology, investigating tumor behavior, outcomes, and the genetic and molecular biomarkers that may predict aggressiveness or recurrence. She has published widely on high-risk skin cancer, rare cutaneous tumors, and molecular prognostics. She is lead or senior author on numerous high-impact studies, including a 2023 New England Journal of Medicine review on cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.

A committed professional society leader, Dr. Wysong is currently President-Elect of the Women’s Dermatologic Society (WDS) and has served on the boards of the American College of Mohs Surgery, WDS, and Dermatology Foundation, and on committees for the AAD, ASDS, ABMS, ADA, APD, SOCS and ACGME. She was honored as the 2023 WDS National Mentor of the Year, is a two-time recipient of the WDS National Service Award, and has also received the ACMS President’s Distinguished Service Award, the UNMC Distinguished Scientist Award, and numerous teaching accolades.

Dr. Wysong’s background also includes a decorated athletic career. A six-time NCAA All-American and national champion in track and field at the University of Missouri, she competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials and Pan-American Games and was inducted into the University of Missouri Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.

With a career that blends surgical precision, scientific rigor, and a passion for mentorship, Dr. Wysong continues to shape the future of dermatology and deliver outstanding care to patients with complex skin cancers.
